Charest, Simon, Jean Saint-Germain, Jean Fontaine. Le grand Druide des cooccurrences: dictionnaire: 450 000 cooccurrences. Montréal, Québec : Druide, 2012. 1469 p. ISBN: 9782897110000: $49.95 CAD

The corpus from which this reference work was drawn consisted primarily of Internet sites, including Le Monde, Le Devoir, Gallica, & Project Gutenberg, totaling 1.8 billion words or 92 million phrases. Based on this corpus, the dictionary was created with the aim of helping writers and students grasp the sense of a word and the way in which words are modified, sometimes very subtly. Eighty percent of the words in the book are nouns, which can be qualified by adjectives, other nouns (some introduced by prepositions), verbs introduced by prepositions, as subjects of verbs, complements of verbs, complements of nouns, complements of adjectives or coordinated with other nouns. GERMAN

Grabow, Oliver W. Gert Westphal: Gesamtverzeichnis seiner Arbeiten von 1940 bis 2002. München: Arethousa, 2013. 433 p.: ill. (chiefly col.). ISBN 9783934207226 (pbk.): € 75.00. Variably hailed over his long career as the "König der Vorleser" or "Caruso der Vorleser" (King of readers, Caruso of readers) or the "Fischer-Dieskau des Wortes" (Fischer-Dieskau of the word), Gert Westphal is honored in this volume with his catalogue raisonné enriched attractively through the inclusion of color cover images from numerous recordings. Parts I and II ennumerate his readings and radio plays and include all pertinent details of performance and recording; part III is devoted to his non-literary recordings; part IV his part in TV and theatrical films; and part IV lists his stage appearances from 1940-2002. And index of recordings and persons rounds out the volume. [RLK]

Schmid, Bernhard and Jürgen Seul, eds. 100 Jahre Verlagsarbeit für Karl May und sein Werk, 1913-2013. Bamberg: Karl-May-Verlag, 2013. 208 p. ill. ISBN 9783780202765 (pbk.): € 17.90. In the case of Germany in particular, one might venture to say, the history of a publishing house is of special interest, especially so in the light of the horrors, challenges and hopes of the 20th century. So the story of the Karl May Verlag is no exception and is of special interest in its reflection of the popular affections attached to its subject. The editors have assembled a beautiful volume, appealingly and abundantly enriched with numerous photos, many in color, from the firm's history, including reproductions of advertisements, covers from its published volumes, portrait photos, and a variety of other photos from its archives. The heart of the content is the main section that covers the history in six sections, year by year. A bibliography ennumerating publications about the firm, the series and periodicals issued by it, and associated archives round out the volume. Well worth its reasonable price. [RLK]

Iseler, Maritta, Sophie Lorenz-Rupsch, Markus Hörsch. Künstler der Jagiellonen-Ära in Mitteleuropa. Kompass Ostmitteleuropa: kritische Beiträge zur Kulturgeschichte, Bd. 2. Ostfildern: Jan Thorbecke Verlag, 2013. 600 p. ill. ISBN 9783799505185: € 49.00. The product of a research project undertaken at the Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum für Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas (Humanities Center for the History and Culture of East-Middle Europe) in Leipzig, this is an encyclopedia of roughly 100 artists living in the east-central European areas at the time of the Jagellon dynasty. Each article provides a biographical and work-descriptive snapshot and includes bibliographies. A general bibliography of about 80 pages and a place/object index complete this work. [RLK]

Kunz, Harry and Thomas Steensen. Föhr-Lexikon. Neumünster/Hamburg: Wachholtz Verlag, 2013. 451 p. ill. (many col.) ISBN 9783529055232: € 29.90. A richly illustrated encyclopedia of all aspects of the second largest German island in the North Sea, this tome comprises over 900 articles replete with maps, graphics and photographs on the "green island," also known as the "wayfarers' island." A large Fering-German and German-Fering translation list (Fering is a dialect of North Frisian spoken on Föhr) aids the reader, and a bibliography completes this attractive reference work. [RLK]

Films, Graphic Novels & Visuals: Developing Multiliteracies in Foreign Language Education, An Interdisciplinary Approach. Ed by Daniel Elsner et al. Fremdsprachendidaktik in globaler Perspektive, Bd. 2. Munster: Lit Verlag, 2013. ISBN 9783643903907: € 24.90

The second book in this new series takes up a theme relatively little covered by the literature of the field. Although two of the twelve chapters are directed specifically towards English as a Foreign Language, the remaining are either broadly theoretical, e.g., “Developing Multiliteracies in the 21st Century: Motives for New Approaches of Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages” or media-specific, e.g., “STreet ART: Fostering Discourse Literacies with Graffiti, Sticker, Stencils, and Paste-ups.” This book could be broadly useful for any teacher of languages, as well as provide an idea for librarians of what sorts of materials are currently being used in language classrooms.
